If you need some buying tips on how to buy an Air Ionizer, then please take a quick look through this post which will outline all you need to know before you buy. Breathing clean air is your right and research has shown that the air in our homes is dirtier than the outdoor air. Whereas it is bad for normal healthy people, it is even more serious for people with breathing related problem and can exacerbate while inhaling polluted indoor air. One of the solutions is to buy and install an air purifier. There are many models and types available based on various technologies. Here I will discuss with you, how you can choose an Ionic Air Purifier or Air Ionizer

How does an Ionic Air Purifier work?

The air consists of molecules of various gases notably Nitrogen and Oxygen, other minor gases and pollutant molecules such and smoke dust etc. These are all electrically neutral molecules. Air ionizers produce what is known as corona discharge which is generated by applying a high voltage to many needle-like structures. The electrons that accumulate at the tip of the needles break free and as they repel each other they tend to spread around without the need of any fan. The electrons which are negatively charged attached to any neighboring molecule making it also negatively charged and thereby turning into an ion.

Pollutants are normally heavy molecules and they easily become charged ions. They seek grounded surface. The Air Purifier provided collector plates which are grounded and the pollutants get attracted and stick to the collector plates. If not, they stick to the floor or walls of the room. In any case, the air becomes free of these pollutants and thereby it becomes cleaner.

Why Ionic Air Purifier is effective?

The Ionic Air Purifiers work on a different principle altogether as compared to other air purifier cleaning techniques and they are able to remove even the smallest pollutants especially bacteria or viruses which may escape a filter.

Choose an Ionic Air Purifier that does not produce Ozone.

Some Air purifiers produce Ozone along with negative ions. Ozone is a harmful gas and such Air Purifiers should not be purchased. Carefully look if the Air Purifier you are buying produces negative ions or Ozone. Some Ozone is invariably produced by Ionic Air Purifiers, but its quantity should be very low. California State laws require that air should have Ozone less than 50 parts per billion by volume. Check the limit of Ozone for your state.

Check the amount of negative ion produced by the Air Purifier

Ensure that the Ionic Air Purifier you are buying is producing high quantity of negative ion. A good Ionic Air purifier will produce anywhere from 10,000,000/cm3 to 60,000,000/cm3 negative ions.

Silent or low noise operation

Ionic Air Purifiers often produce a humming sound that is quite irritating. Choose a unit that has low humming noise. Some models have night mode, which reduces the noise to a considerable level.

Easy cleaning

Since pollutants accumulate on the collector plates of the Ionic Air purifier, look for models that are easy to clean and maintain.  See that it has easy access for removal and cleaning of collector plates without the need for special tools. Especially look for front loading collector blades models.

Indicator Lights

Look for units that indicate by lights when the plates have become dirty and cleaning of collector plates is necessary. This takes the guess work out of maintenance of the unit.

Design and Style

The Ionic Air Purifiers come in various shapes and style and you can choose a sleek style which is not very heavy so you can easily move it around.

Additional features

Some Ionic Air Purifiers have HEPA or charcoal filters, UV lights and other air purifying features. This all adds to the cost of the Air Purifier, so choose the features you really need.

Warranty

Check for warranty. Ensure that the unit you are purchasing has at least 1-year warranty.
